Pregnancy Scans

An ultrasound scan uses sound waves to create images of the inside of your body, including your baby. It is a safe, non-invasive procedure that can be performed during various stages of your pregnancy.

Types of ultrasound scans

(7-11 weeks): Confirms pregnancy, estimates gestational age, checks for multiple pregnancies.

(11+3 to 13+6 weeks): Estimates due date, screens for Down syndrome* and early fetal structural abnormalities.

(14-19 weeks): Checks for fetal development and abnormalities in early pregnancy

(20-22 weeks): Assesses fetal growth, checks for structural abnormalities, examines the placenta and amniotic fluid, gender determination*

(After 23 weeks): Monitors fetal growth, blood flows (Doppler studies), assesses placenta and amniotic fluid, identifies potential complications

Measures the length of the cervix transvaginally. Recommended if you are at high risk of preterm birth.

What should I expect from my pregnancy scan appointment?

Your scan will be performed by a consultant obstetrician; therefore, you can expect a comprehensive evaluation of your pregnancy and the health of your baby. The consultant will begin by discussing your medical history, any concerns you may have, and your expectations for the scan. The ultrasound procedure itself will be explained to you, ensuring you understand what to expect and how to prepare. During the scan, the consultant will use ultrasound to visually assess the development of your baby, measure key parameters, and check for any potential issues. You will have the opportunity to view real-time images of your baby, and the consultant will provide clear explanations of the findings.

What information will I receive after my ultrasound?

You will receive a report detailing the findings of the scan, which the consultant will discuss with you.  If any abnormalities or concerns are detected during your scan, the consultant will discuss potential next steps and care options with you.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for an ultrasound scan?

Preparation can vary depending on the type of ultrasound. For the viability and nuchal scans, you may be advised to have a full bladder for better imaging. For scans after 12 weeks, this may not be necessary. You can eat and drink beforehand.

Are ultrasound scans safe for my baby?

Yes, ultrasound scans are considered very safe and do not involve radiation. They are commonly used and preferred imaging method in pregnancy.

Will my ultrasound scan hurt?

Ultrasound scans are generally painless. You may feel some pressure when the transducer is applied to your abdomen, but it should not cause discomfort. If an internal scan is required, the transducer is designed to curve to your vagina’s shape so that the procedure is as painless as possible. The process may feel similar but less uncomfortable than having a smear test.

When can I find out the sex of my baby on scan?

The sex of the baby can often be determined during the mid-pregnancy scan (around 17-20 weeks). However, accuracy can depend on the baby’s position.

Will I receive scan images? Do you perform 3D/ 4D scans?

We will provide 2D (black and white) images with no additional charge. 3D/4D images are not routinely performed unless the baby’s position is favourable.

Can I bring someone with me to the ultrasound?

Yes, we allow you to bring a partner or a support person with you to your appointment. It can be a special experience to share together!
